Weeds are able tooutcompete native species(the opposite of a weed, itbelongs here) and have thepotential to harm the environment.Usually weeds arespread by humans but alsocan be transported by wind,water, wildlife and livestock.There are two important classificationsof weeds in Alberta,”Prohibited Noxious”and “Noxious”. Prohibitednoxious weeds by law arerequired to be “destroyed” asthey are highly aggressiveand are uncommon in Alberta.Noxious weeds areunfortunately common inmany regions and are requiredto be “controlled” tolimit their abundance andprevent further spread.What are weeds?Special points of interest:• What you can do as a riparian resident.
